Some additional information if you're planning to run an Electrum server

Operating system: UBUNTU LINUX
You find information to run an Electrum server (called Electrumx) here and the installer here, but I think it's useful to have a look at the information here first:
My Electrumx data is in /media/electrumx/db_directoy
ls -d /media/electrumx/db_directory/* 
and /media/electrumx points to my SSD

Download the installer:
git clone 
Go into the installer directory:
cd electrumx-installer 
I didn't use options when running, just changed the following directly in the script:
After that:
sudo ./ 
I start electrumx like this:
sudo systemctl start electrumx 
I stop electrumx like this:
sudo systemctl stop electrumx

What are recommended bitcoin.conf settings when using c-lightning?

I'm running full (non-pruned) bitcoin core 0.20 on Ubuntu 18. My current bitcoin.conf is:
txindex=1 listenonion=0 server=1 rpcuser=xxx rpcpassword=xxx rpcthreads=1 
If I use c-lightning, what changes do I need to make to the above file? Thanks in advance.

Connecting bitcoin-qt to bitcoind on local network

I have a bitcoin node running on a headless box (bitcoind) and I would like to connect to it using bitcoin-qt on my desktop. I'm getting a little confused with the process.... does bitcoin-qt need to connect to bitcoind using RPC? Do I store my wallet file on the bitcoind box, or bitcoin-qt box?
The bitcoin node is already setup to work with an electrum server, so I already have rpcbind=, rpcallowip=$ELECTRUX_IP, and rpcuserpcpassword set. I tried adding my desktop IP to rpcallowip, and setting the appropriate username/password in bitcoin-qt's bitcoin.conf, but no luck. I can see in debug.log for bitcoin-qt that the connection is rejected.

The node runs over TOR and I have onlynet=onion set in bitcoind's bitcoin.conf, but that doesn't seem to stop electrumx connecting via RPC over clearnet, so this shouldn't be an issue right?

Am I missing something here? Help would be much appreciated!

Bitcoin core RPC very slow: "mapOrphan overflow, removed 1 tx"

I am running bitcoin core v0.18.0 and noticed that now my queries made locally through the RPC are taking very long. Here is my bitcoin.conf:

The node is up-to-date and I didn't detect anything unusual (like a stale block/fork).

Questions about running a full node on a raspberry pi

I am setting up a full node on my raspberry pi (with 4 gb ram), which is connected to a 1TB external hard drive. I have some questions:
  1. How can I tell bitcoind that I would like it to store chain data on the external hard drive (which I have mounted to /mnt/harddrive)?
  2. After running ./configure, I still don't see ~/.bitcoin/ present. I have created the directory, but how will bitcoind know where to look for the configuration file, bitcoin.conf?
  3. I am hoping to do some data analysis of historical bitcoin transaction data using RPC. Is this the most efficient way to retrieve information?
  4. What settings should I have in the bitcoin.conf file to ensure that I can read historical data? Right now, I have txindex=1, rpcuserpcpassword, server=1, daemon=1. Am I missing any obvious ones? (I haven't been able to find a full spec on what is and isn't allowed in the configuration file).

No inbound connections on my bitcoin full node with TOR

update: it's ok now, it only required some time. Also, looking at debug.log it won't show anything about inbound connections as I thought, it must be used `bitcoin-cli getpeerinfo` in order to get all the connections info (inbound + outbound)

I'm behind a CG-NAT so I thought to use TOR to overcame it but still I have outbound connections but no inbound.

Bitcoind stuck in startup loading block index

I have had bitcoin core running on a raspberry pi for about 4 month now (followed the raspibolt instructions from stadicus) and it worked fine until 3 days ago it suddenly stopped working. With bitcoin-cli blockchaininfo i got

After that there should follow a line about Loading the block index but it never appears.
It seems to be restarting without shutting down correctly, maybe it cannot find the block index? I tried reinstalling core, recreating the symlink to the hdd and resetting the service but nothing happened. Everytime it starts it gets stuck at the same point. It also takes an awful long time to stop bitcoind but i don't know if that is normal.
I found several people with similar problems online but noting helped so far. Has anyone had a similar problem in the past and found a solution to this?

Guide to running bitcoind on a Raspberry Pi 4 (4gb ram) on an external hard drive

I have seen a lot of guides online but for a few reasons I thought it'd be good to share how I set up my full node (with relatively few headaches) and less than $150.

Stuff to get

  1. Raspberry Pi 4 (4gb ram is essential!) - $55
  2. Power cable for the raspberry pi - $10
  3. Case for the raspberry pi - $5 (optional, looks good and makes it easier to store)
  4. microHDMI to HDMI cable (needed to view desktop of raspberry pi) - $10
  5. SD Card, at least 8GB - ~$10+ (PS: you may also need a converter to read/write from your PC to the SD card).
  6. External hard drive, ideally at least a 1TB - $50+

Setup the Raspberry pi

  1. Download NOOBS and unzip it to SD card, and insert the SD card into the Raspberry Pi.
  2. Insert the SD card into the Raspberry Pi, and place the Raspberry Pi into its case. Connect the relevant cables, and plug in the power to the Raspberry Pi.
  3. Follow the instructions on screen to get Raspian up and running.

Configuring the External Hard Drive

  1. Turn off automount
  2. Configure the raspberry pi to mount the external hard drive where you want it. See this page on how to configure external hard drives for Raspberry Pis.

Download and configure bitcoin-core

  1. Go to and download bitcoin-core.
  2. Follow the instructions here and install bitcoin-core.
  3. Create a directory called .bitcoin from the home directory.
  4. Create a file called bitcoin.conf in ~/.bitcoin. Add the following settings to it to ensure that you can process historical transactions:

server=1 txindex=1 rpcuser= rpcpassword= datadir= dbcache=2500 

Run bitcoind

  1. From the command line, run bitcoind -daemon
  2. Now you can run bitcoin-cli -getinfo or tail /debug.log to get info on how bitcoind is doing.
That should do it. Assuming a solid internet connection, you should be up and running relatively quickly (less than a day). If you need help, feel free to ask questions below. I'd be happy to help.

Could not connect to Bitcoin Core using JSON-RPC error message when launching Eclair

Hi! I am new to the Lightning Network and I am seeking to install a Lighting Network full node on my PC.

I already have Bitcoin Core installed and my full bitcoin node working (version 0.17.1).

I went through some steps to install the LN full node on a video on YouTube, following instructions from a Medium post: "How to run a Lightning Network node on Windows" (

I installed Eclair (v0.2-beta9) from their Github page.

But when I try to launch Eclair (with my Bitcoin Core node up and running), an error message pops us, saying:
Could not connect to Bitcoin Core using JSON-RPC.
Make sure that Bitcoin Core is up and running and RPC parameters are correct.

[DEVELOPMENT] Bitcoind IPV4 testnet port (18332) is failing to bind

Hello everyone, this is a development problem that I'm currently having. Since the BTC Development sub is kind of inactive and I couldn't find any rule contraty to posting about BTC Development, I'll try my luck in here as I'm hopeless already. I've posted on BTC Stack Exchange but no answers also. Please, don't get me wrong, I'm trying to solve this problem for many days now, I've looked up everywhere for this.
I'm new to Bitcoin development and I'm currently having difficulties trying to make RPC calls from a Docker Container to a Bitcoin-Core daemon running in a SSH server. I suppose that the problem may be with Firewall or closed ports, but I also do not know much about Network settings.
I'm using nbobtc/bitcoind-php package to make the RPC calls with HTTP requests, and it is running in a Docker container. I'm sure the container is functional and is not the problem.
So here's what happening: when I run bitcoind in root user (but normal also won't work) in my SSH server, the IPV4 testnet port seems to be not opened. This message goes up when I run bitcoind:
Binding RPC on address port 18332 failed.
Here's what my bitcoin.conf looks like (I want to use testnet in here). I'm using Bitcoin-Core "subversion": "Satoshi:0.17.1".

Lightning node on Windows - testing, get not connected

Ok after testing BTCPay, C-Lightning, LND on Ubuntu I said ok let's try also the Windows implementation, is just few clicks and done (as it is promoted).
So I followed this github guide that actually send you to this one.
OK, started Bitcoin-core client on Windows 7 x64, with an already synced data folder. Empty bitcoin.conf (none of guides says how to configure the conf file). Wait until the client is full synced. And then launched the windows-node-launcher (from a subfolder inside Bitcoin folder). All good, started slowly and a small popup appeared in systray saying Bitcoin node is syncing. Reviewed the config of Bitcoin and LND through that little app in systray and saw that bitcoin.conf was already filled with some settings. Didn't change anything. After 1 day (with the bitcoin blockchain already synced), the systray popup still says that is syncing and have a red dot. In the tutorial says that we have to leave it to sync until is blue and then green.
I said, ok maybe it has more things to do. So I open that LND Output link, to see what is going on... And I see that LND is not well. Hello and welcome to my first tutorial. Today I will show you how to install almost any QT-wallet on the RaspberryPi. I hope this tutorial will help you. I use the BankSocietyCoin in this tutorial, you can change it also to your fav. Coin.

Install Raspbian , *Buster produced a lot of failures on my system while compiling Wallets*
(my version: )
Run the following commands:

Change Swap Size of the Rasp:

sudo nano /etc/dphys-swapfile
change to CONF_SWAPSIZE=2048
press: ctrl o Enter and ctrl x
enable the swap file with its new size:
sudo dphys-swapfile setup
sudo dphys-swapfile swapon
Install Required Dependencies:

apt-get update
sudo apt-get install git build-essential libtool autotools-dev autoconf pkg-config libssl-dev libcrypto++-dev libevent-dev libminiupnpc-dev libgmp-dev libboost-all-dev devscripts libdb++-dev libsodium-dev
sudo apt-get install libqt5gui5 libqt5core5a libqt5dbus5 qttools5-dev qttools5-dev-tools libprotobuf-dev protobuf-compiler libcrypto++-dev libminiupnpc-dev qt5-default
Install bitcoin PPA files for the compiling process:

cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
sudo nano bitcoin.list
paste to following line:
deb-src artful main
press: ctrl o Enter and ctrl x
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp:// --recv C70EF1F0305A1ADB9986DBD8D46F45428842CE5E
sudo apt-get update
Install working libssl:

cd && sudo apt-get remove libssl-dev
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
change stretch to jessie
press: ctrl o Enter and ctrl x
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
sudo apt-mark hold libssl-dev
sudo apt-mark hold libssl1.0.0
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Change jessie" back to stretch
press: ctrl o Enter and ctrl x
sudo apt-get update

Compile and Install BerkeleyDB 4.8.30 :

sudo tar -xzvf db-4.8.30.NC.tar.gz
cd db-4.8.30.NC/build_unix
sudo ../dist/configure --enable-cxx
sudo make
sudo make install
export CPATH="/uslocal/BerkeleyDB.4.8/include"
export LIBRARY_PATH="/uslocal/BerkeleyDB.4.8/lib"

Help wanted: Network problem with Bitcoin Core Full Node and Samourai Wallet.

Hi all

I have port forwarding set up for TCP 8333 and TCP 8332.
Firewall says:
8332 ALLOW Anywhere
8332 (v6) ALLOW Anywhere (v6)
8333 ALLOW Anywhere # bitcoin mainnet
8333 (v6) ALLOW Anywhere (v6) # bitcoin mainnet

I'm able to reach 8333 using - but 8332 is closed .

here is the RPC config from ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf

Need help trying to figure out why block contains few transactions

I'm trying to troubleshoot bitcoin block 0000000000000000001aaef7bdca12abf93c862b5df4db96ca6130b6445655c1. The Prohashing pool found this block this morning, but it only has 9 transactions. The blocks around it appear to have many more transactions than this one does, some as many as 1300. Yet, getblocktemplate returned just a few transactions. This is the third block where there were about the same number of transactions.
Since all the other coins mined by the pool contain a lot of transactions, it's unlikely that this problem is a bug in the mining server that limits blocks to 9 transactions. For example, litecoin block 9d24ac1c74689309c08f4d2bd4eb47210c8f44f4c788472fd003bf7d8d4ad562 contains 19 transactions. Bitcoin Cash block 000000000000000000c966e7c0f566df540efc2b30604188a7cf511cb8e41730 also contains more than 9 transactions. That's why I think the problem is a configuration error.
Here's the bitcoin.conf file, in case that helps.

While a lot of discussion here is about BCH, all of our employees are banned from all of the Core's discussion forums, so this is the only place we can go. Any help someone can provide would be appreciated, as including more transactions in blocks would also allow the networks to function better for everyone.

Step by step in staking Redd with Raspberry Pi 3

Before I start, I would like to pay complete credits to these two guys :) (most of my steps, if not all, are from this link)
All the steps I am writing is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, please don't try to skip it because I did, and it doesn't work.
step 1: get a Raspberry Pi B
step 2: make sure you get proper power supply 5v 2A - the Pi will mine, it will need sufficient power. Regular USB samsung charger will not work.
step 3: get proper micro SD card (SanDisk for example) 32Gb++
step 4: USB + Mouse keyboard
step 5: flash micro SD card with Ubuntu MATE
Download Ubuntu Mate image:
Download Etcher:
After finishing downloading, use Etcher to write/flash the image on micro SD card
After this, your SD card contains Ubuntu MATE OS.
step 6: Place SD Card into Raspberry Pi 3 and start it up. You should be able to see Ubuntu OS! Congrats!
step 7: Connect to wifi or internet cable (internet is better and faster)
step 8: OPTIONAL - turn off UI OS, so that things will work faster
Open XTerminal:
sudo systemctl disable lightdm.service (to turn UI off) 
in case you want to turn UI on again, run this:
sudo systemctl start lightdm.service (to turn UI on) 
step 9: install all dependencies

step 10: add additional RAM (sort of) in case the App need it, this is call "Create Swap file"

step 11: Build Berkeley Database

step 11.5: Set BerkeleyDB path

step 12: Build Reddcoin Wallet
---download source code ---- only source from joroob/reddcoin will work because some stweak was needed for ARM CPU

If you finish this, you are in a great position!!!
step 13: Create reddcoin configuration file
step 14: Use bootstrap
(At this point, you had a running reddcoin daemon, now you can start staking. But syncing the full chain takes long time.)
cd ~/.reddcoin wget xz -d bootstrap.dat.xz 
step 15: start the reddcoin daemon service cd ~/reddcoin/src ./reddcoind -daemon
After this, you can test if the daemon is working, by perform this command: ./reddcoin-cli getblockcount
step 16: if your app is not able to sync, it is probably the firewall issue with OS, run this to allow port 45444 (used by Reddcoin) and redo step 15
sudo iptables -I INPUT 1 -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 45444 -j ACCEPT sudo iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 45444 -j ACCEPT 
step 17: open BEER and enjoy! This is a MUST or the daemon will stop working! I am not kidding!
step 18: Actually, i forgot to mention you need to execute this command for the wallet to stake:
reddcoind walletpassphrase $yourpassword 9999999 true 
From my PC: I am using putty to execute the command, winSCP to monitor the file location on raspberry.
Moving Red Coins out of exchange really a big move, start with normal wallet, don't start with this tutorial :) Ever since I move my coins out of exchange, I am free from all of the ups and downs! Really!

Soo after almost 3 months of setting up I have my own LN full node running on RP3
I have been eager to try LN mainnet since the very beginning of it. I've found out about lnd, eclair, zap and other wallets but every scenario I tried to use it failed because of critical issues:
  • eclair does not really constitute a wallet, it's more like a credit card - you can send money but not receive it
  • lnd is okay, but requires a server and tons of resources for maintaining a full node, can't be used securely, efficiently and mobily at the same time
  • zap offers some cloud wallet (in testnet!) by default, this is a serious misunderstanding of my cryptoanarchy needs
  • web wallets - ah, forget it
So I've decided to use my Raspberry Pi with a very old laptop HDD attached (200GB so the pruning function has to be used) to create a backend wallet service and zap desktop (temporarily!) as my frontend control panel.
Setting up Pi is easy, lots of tutorials over the internet, not gonna discuss it here. Then I had to obtain bitcoind (current rel: bitcoin-0.17.0-arm-linux-gnueabihf.tar.gz) and lnd (lnd-linux-armv7-v0.5-beta.tar.gz), create a bitcoin technical user, deploy the tools, configure and install new systemd services and go through the configs. This is a tricky part, so let's share:

Whooaa, this online config generator is really helpful, but I still had to manually correct a few things. The last line is obviously generated by, I disabled the wallet functionality as lnd is going to take care of my funds. ZMQ is not available to the network so only my LND can use it, RPC usage I still have to think through a little, in general I would like to have my own block explorer some day but also be safe from any hacking attempts (thus I would need at least 2 RPC ports/user accounts - one for lnd, one for block explorer frontend). No ports open on firewall at this time, only UPnP is active and gently opens 8333 for block/tx transfers.
Now, synchronizing the blockchain took me time from mid-July to early September... The hard drive is really slow, also my external HDD drive has some trouble with its A/C adapter so Pi was getting undervoltage alerts all the time. Luckily, it is just downclocking when it happens and slowly but steadily synchronized the whole history. After all, I'm not paying even $5 monthly for a VPS, it is by design the cheapest hardware I could use to set up my LN wallet.
When bitcoind was ready (I've heard some stories about btcd but I don't trust this software yet, sorry), it's time to configure lnd.conf:

Here I've had to XXX a little more fields, as not only the bitcoind RPC credentials are stored here, but also my node's public information (it should be illegal to run nodes without specifically selected color and alias!). It is public (and I had to open port 9735 on my firewall), but not necessarily connected to my reddit account for most of the adversaries, so let's keep it this way. In fact, I also see a security vulnerability here: my whole node's stability depends on the IP being static. I could swap it for a .tk domain but who can tell if the bad guys won't actively fight DNS system in order to prevent global economic revolution? As such, I would rather see node identification in LN based on a public key only with possible *hints* of last-known-ip-address but the whole discovery should be performed by the nodes themself in a p2p manner, obviously preventing malicious actors from poisoning the network in some way. For now, I consider the IP stability a weak link and will probably have to pay extra Bitcoin TX fees when something happens to it (not much of a cost luckily!).
Okay then, lnd is up and running, had to create a wallet and give it a night for getting up to speed. I don't know really what took it so long, I'm not using Windows nor 'localhost' in the config so the issues like #1027 are not the case. But there are others like #1545 still open so I'm not going to ponder much on this. I haven't really got any idea how to automatically unlock the wallet after Pi restart (could happen any time!), especially since I only tried to unlock it locally with lncli (why would I enter the password anywhere outside that host?), but let's say that my wallet will only be as stable as my cheap hardware. That's okay for the beta phase.
Finally, zap-desktop required me to copy tls.cert and admin.macaroon files to my desktop. If my understanding of macaroon (it's like an authentication cookie, that can later be revoked) is correct then it's not an issue, however it would be nice to have a "$50 daily limit" macaroon file in the future too, just to avoid any big issues when my client machine gets stolen. Thanks to this, I can ignore the silly cloud-based modes and have fully-secure environment of my home network being the only link from me to my money.
Aaand there it is. The IP took some time to advertise, I use to see if my node is there. The zap interface (ZapDesktop-linux-amd64-v0.2.2-beta.deb) lacks lots of useful information so I keep learning lncli syntax to get more data about my new peers or the routes offered. The transactions indeed run fast and are ridiculously cheap. I would really love to run Eclair with the same settings but it doesn't seem to support custom lnd (why?). In fact, since all I need is really a lncli wrapper, maybe it will be easy to write my own (seen some web gui which weighs 700MB after downloading all dependencies with npm - SICK!). Zap for iOS alpha test registration is DOWN so I couldn't try it (and I'm not sure if it allows custom lnd selection), Zap for Android doesn't even exist yet... I made a few demo transactions and now I will explore all those fancy t-shirt stores as long as the prices are still in "early investor" mode - I remember times when one could get 0.001 BTC from a faucet...
If you find any of the facts presented by me false, I am happy to find out more in the discussion. However what I did I did mostly for fun, without paying much attention to the source code, documentation and endless issue lists on github. By no means I claim this tutorial will work for you but I do think I shared the key points and effort estimations to help others decide if they want a full-node LN client too. I'm also interested in some ideas on what to do with it next (rather unlikely that I will share my lnd admin.macaroon with anyone!) especially if it gives me free money. For example, I can open 1000 channels and start earning money from fees, although I no longer have more Bitcoins than the LN capacity yields... I will probably keep updating the software on my Pi until it leaves beta phases and only then will pour more money inside. I'm also keen on improving the general security of my rig and those comments I will answer more seriously.

FreeBSD node + ban 2x nodes script

For those of us that are running FreeNAS at home, I figured out how to adapt THIS ban script for our FreeBSD systems. Create a new jail, (I named mine node) configure your router for your jail to get a static lease and port forward 8333.

Access your terminal and log in. I use [PuTTY]( since my FreeBSD server is headless. Switch to your jail with the following:

jexec (JID of your node) tcsh

Now Get installing!

Pkg update
Pkg upgrade
pkg install bitcoin-daemon bitcoin-utils nano

Lets configure bitcoin-cli!

cd uslocal/etc
nano bitcoin.conf

Now lets configure the bitcoin-daemon

cd /root
cd .bitcoin
nano bitcoin.conf

make bitcoind run on startup

cd /.
cd etc
nano rc.conf

If you already have a node running, start here for the ban script

pkg install jq wget bash
git clone
cd ban-segshit8x-nodes

replace first line with:

chmod +x

To see a report of current banned IPs from the bitcoin daemon, type

bitcoin-cli listbanned

Now lets set up a cronjob to execute this script on a daily basis. First lets change crontab's editor to nano:

setenv VISUAL /uslocal/bin/nano
crontab -e
@daily /ban-segshit8x-nodes/

To view a list of all jobs, type

crontab -l

To remove a cron job, edit crontab with the same command above:

crontab -e

My next project is to get bitcoind-ncurses terminal front end working...

How can I make test-net?

I've tried to make test-net for mining pool test. There's no information or seed node for testnet. and find reddit and add testnet node to conf, but, testnode ip is very old , not working now. Is there latest information for make testnet? thanks,

Solo mining for Gits and Shiggles

I run a full Bitcoin node. Lately I've been playing around with setting up solo mining with BFGMiner, just experimenting with CPUs and GPUs, in full knowledge its a purely academic thing with zero chance of succeeding, intending only to deepen my understanding of the system. Seems to work well, for the most part.
Except when I point my S9's at the pool, I only get about 250 GH instead of 13.5 TH each. I've made sure to turn off overt asciboost when I point them at my experiment, no effect, and they definitely are connected. Does anyone else play around with this stuff and might know the solution already?
FWIW: Ubuntu Bitcoin Core v0.17 BFGMiner v5.5.0
Bitcoin.conf, server, daemon, listen, and txindex set to 1. rpcuser and rpcpassword are set, rpcallowip and rpcport are all good(and proven as I can connect other pcs over the LAN just fine for cpu/gpu)
BFGMiner -o http://127.0.01:8332 -u user - pword --generate-to $address --coinbase-sig "LOL" --stratum-port:3333

Notes on a first quick test of NTumblebit, on Linux and regtest.

I just thought I'd jot down a few notes on the experience of trying out the current NTumbleBit code.
This is testing on regtest, done for the simple reason that you don't have to wait for testnet blocks (nor sync testnet which is mildly annoying). At this stage I just wanted to learn how this works.
Your starting point is this wiki page.


You need to download Bitcoin Core. Use at least 0.13.1 - this turned out to be only major blocking point in the whole test, funnily enough, for me - it took me a few hours(!) in debugging to realize that the reason my wallet's coins were not being recognized was simply because 0.12.1 didn't support the necessary RPC syntax. (Note to devs: is there a way to expose errors/exception to the user in the client to help with under-the-hood errors like that? RPC configuration errors are exposed, so that's good of course).
Since this is regtest, that's it: you don't need to sync any blockchains :)
However, you do of course have to configure and start it. Put a bitcoin.conf somewhere (if you're currently running a node it's easiest to make a separate one from your main ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf one, of course. I put one in ~/bitcoin.conf with these settings:
rpcuser=bitcoinrpc rpcpassword=123456abcdef 
(you'll need those values again in a minute) and then run with
~/bitcoininstallationdibitcoind -regtest -daemon -conf=homedibitcoin.conf 
(I didn't need to add server=1 to config).
Note that coins are not available until maturity, so you need to use the generate command to mine blocks, like this:
~/bitcoininstallationdibitcoin-cli -regtest -rpcuser=bitcoinrpc -rpcpassword=123456abcdef generate 101 
Now your regtest bitcoind is running, you can move on to Tumblebit. Follow the instructions in the wiki page mentioned at the start; install .Net Core - the Microsoft instructions are easy to follow, just a couple of apt-gets and install the *.deb. Next, clone the github repo and run the Unit Tests. They passed first time for me.


Next, start up the server, following the instructions in the wiki, except note you're using regtest, so:
cd NTumbleBit.TumblerServer dotnet run -regtest 
The first start up will compile but also set up RSA keys, all that is fine without changes, but you'll need to edit the config so that the RPC is pointing at your regtest instance properly. In this case it (the new config should be located in ~/.ntumblebit/RegTest/server.config) should be edited to look like:
rpc.url=http://localhost:18332/ rpc.user=bitcoinrpc rpc.password=123456abcdef #rpc.cookiefile=yourbitcoinfolde.cookie 
Then restart and check you get no RPC errors. Leave that console open, it's running a server loop.
Next, configure and start the client. Note, we are still following the wiki page, except for the regtest element, so:
cd NTumbleBit.CLI dotnet run -regtest 
You'll most likely get an RPC error again, before it shuts down. Now we need to edit the ~/.ntumblebit/RegTest/client.config file. The server can be left as the default localhost:5000, but you need the right RPC settings:
rpc.url=http://localhost:18332/ rpc.user=bitcoinrpc rpc.password=123456abcdef #rpc.cookiefile=yourbitcoinfolde.cookie tumbler.server=http://localhost:5000 outputwallet.extpubkey= outputwallet.keypath=0 
the last two fields are the important bit, which the wiki page explains in some detail for the testnet case.

Details on setting up a receiving wallet (for this test!)

What you need is a BIP32 based wallet (HD) that supports testnet, and can be run against regtest here (which in most cases will be the same thing to a wallet, as long as it can connect via RPC to sync itself). The good news is the wallet doesn't need to contain any coins. The details of the following probably won't be suitable for most (if you've never used joinmarket it's a bit convoluted), so you'll probably want to find another easy to use wallet; the wiki page should be a good starting point.
For my test I used joinmarket; all we need to do is (a) hook it up to the regtest instance, and (b) extract the BIP32 xpub key that we'll be sending coins to. So in my case the flow of coins is:
Regtest Bitcoin Core wallet (containing 'mined' coins) one branch of my BIP32 joinmarket wallet, configured to sync against the same regtest instance.
I used my new joinmarket code but it's the same for the main joinmarket code. I overwrote joinmarket.cfg to have regtest settings (use this file; only the highlighted settings matter, those are the right ones for this test), then just run python randomseed. "randomseed" there can be literally anything, it's read as a brainwallet style seed for the bip32 wallet (because testnet, we don't care about its insecurity). The tpub.. keys seen for each branch are the "xpub" public keys at that branch of the BIP32 wallet. Tumblebit is going to send to a branch below whatever xpub we need, so the simplest is to add a print statement to print the xpub key above that; e.g. add this code:

immediately above this line. Then run again python randomseed.
Extract an xpub for any one of the "mixdepths", e.g. I chose:

and put that tpub.. key into the field pubkey in the above mentioned 'client.config':

Now save and quit.

Running the tumble

Restart the client. If RPC is right, it'll start running, waiting for blocks. Your regtest Core instance will have coins (after the previous generate 101), and those coins will be automatically tumbled, one coin at a time, into the output wallet (in my case, the branch m/0/3/0 which is labelled there 'mixdepth 3, external').
Now you can test and watch the process! Open up a third console and repeatedly generate blocks:
/path/to/bitcoin/bin/bitcoin-cli -regtest -rpcpassword=123456abcdef generate 1 
As each block is generated you'll see the state in the client terminal window updating, showing the phases. A new 'epoch' (right term?) is started every N blocks (I haven't investigated the timing yet), and several epochs run concurrently. In each one, the client can pay in 1 Bitcoin (from Core) and eventually get out 1 coin - fees to the destination (Joinmarket in my case, any other BIP32 in yours). You can replace generate 1 with generate N but I'm not sure if the code will always correctly handle you mining lots of blocks at once! After a large enough number of blocks you'll start to see 'ClientCashout phase' occurring, and txids being printed out. You can go back to your (JM or other) wallet and see the coins arriving; here's what I see after a few epochs have gone through (using my python randomseed command):

How to run a Bitcoin Full Node for $12/mo.

I'm going to explain how I am running my Full Bitcoin Node for only $12 USD per month.
Please let me know if you are able to do this more cheaply, and if I am making any mistakes in my commands, because I am no expert, I just like to support the network.
So here goes:

Step 1: Get A Virtual Private Server

Get yourself a VPS Linux box somewhere, with a minimum of 100 GB disk space and 4 GB RAM. I love DeepNet Solutions OpenVZ ( and select any 4096 solution for $12 USD/mo. Paid in bitcoin, of course... :-)
I selected Ubuntu 14.04 as operating system, which seems to work great for this.

Step 2: Connect To Your Server

Download puTTY (, or use your own SSH client software to connect to the server.
To connect to the server you run:
putty.exe -ssh XYZ -l root -pw PWD 
where XYZ is the IP address of your server and PWD is the password of the root login.

Step 3: Install Bitcoin

When connected to the server it is time to install Bitcoin through the command line. I use these commands:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install software-properties-common sudo apt-get install python-software-properties sudo apt-add-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bitcoind mkdir ~/.bitcoin touch ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf chmod 600 ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf 
The next command will error out but will show the password you need later.
bitcoind echo rpcuser=bitcoinrpc >> ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf echo rpcpassword=XYZ >> ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf 
XYZ is the password you see on the screen.
crontab -e 
My server asks me which editor I want to use, and I choose VIM. I then use "dd" to delete the lines.
So bitcoin is started when you reboot the server, put:
@reboot bitcoind -daemon 
Then save the file with command ":wq"

Step 4: Start The Bitcoin Server

Now start the Bitcoin server for the first time:
bitcoind -daemon 
Congrats! You are now a Bitcoin Knight...

Step 5 (optional): Register With Bitnodes At

Go to where XYZ is the IP address of your server.
Register your server. I also set the Alerts so I receive email messages when the status of the server changes. It may take a few days before the server is online and caught up with 100% of the blockchain.
